Legend of the Crimea
Egyptian God was the first one who stamped the peninsula when traveled here on the sacred bull – “tavros”. It was the first name of it and after became to Tavrika, Tavrida.
It has the richest and most diverse history of any other – Cimmerians and Tauris from Herodotus’ times; peculiarity of Scythia; scene of the legends and myths of Antique Greece – famous Orest and Pilad, Sun God Helios’ sons: Persey and Eet who kept the Golden Fleece; beautiful Amazons lived here and swam in Lake of youth that exist till now high in the mountain; ancient Greeks founded here the Bospor kingdom and Tavrika’ Khersoness. Guy Julius Caesar when got a victory over Tavrika’ king Evpator said his famous phrase “has come, has seen, has won”. Here were created the cave-cities of antiquity, Feodoro princedom. Byzantium has had it administrative outpost in Khersoness city.
Russia has adopted Christianity in Khersoness, where Prince of Kiev Vladimir and his wife were christened. Christian enlighteners Kirill and Mefodiy visited Khersoness. In christian and catholic history Khersoness is a place where the First Rome episcopacy – Kliment I, was banished and died.
Tavrika has had the sea trade-routes with many trade-centres. It was conquered by Turkish fleet - Genoese fortresses and cities were destroyed, and Muslim era has come in Tavrika that was renamed to the Crimea.
In Crimea lived and visited many historical figures: tsar Nicolay II, empress Ekaterina II, empress Alexander II, other great figures of the World. On Yalta conference F. Roosevelt, I. Stalin and U. Churchill decided the fate of post-war Europe and World. Many Russian, Europe and American politicians, artists, writers, philosophers stayed here and found the spiritual inspiration and internal peaceful.
