Hamalia bears the name of a legendary Ukrainian Cossack and freedom fighter celebrated in Taras Shevchenko's (famous Ukrainian poet) poem of the same name (1842).

Under his leadership, Zaporizhian Cossacks conducted several successful naval campaigns against the Turkish Sultan to rescue their fellow Ukrainians from Turkish captivity.
